Surrey County Council has unveiled a new fleet of 34 Wrightbus Hydroliners, powered by green hydrogen, as part of a £16m initiative to enhance sustainable travel options. These buses, a mix of single-decks and double deckers, come equipped with features like Wi-Fi, charging points, and social seating. The buses are set to operate on various routes in Surrey, providing a range of up to 600 miles. This move follows the deployment of 20 hydrogen buses in the Horley, Gatwick, and Crawley areas in 2023, operated by Metrobus. The investment also includes £6.3m for ultra-low and zero-emission minibuses, £9m for bus priority measures to improve punctuality, and £1.4m for enhancing passenger information at bus stops. The initiative reflects Surrey's commitment to sustainable travel and cleaner air, with the aim of benefiting residents and visitors alike. Matt Furniss, SCC Cabinet Member, highlighted the significance of these zero-emission buses in providing environmentally friendly transportation. Ed Wills, Managing Director of Metrobus, emphasized the positive impact of the partnership, showcasing the collective effort to achieve zero emissions and promote sustainable practices in the region.
