Tata Motors has embarked on a significant step towards sustainable transportation by commencing the trial runs of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks in India. This move is in line with the country's ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The trial phase will involve deploying 16 advanced hydrogen-powered trucks with different configurations and payload capacities on prominent freight corridors for a duration of 24 months. These trucks are equipped with cutting-edge Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H2-ICE) and Fuel Cell (H2-FCEV) technologies and will be tested extensively. Tata Motors, a leading commercial vehicle manufacturer in India, plans to test these vehicles on key freight routes around major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinganagar. The trials, supported by the ministry of new and renewable energy under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aim to evaluate the commercial feasibility of hydrogen-powered long haulage vehicles and the necessary infrastructure for their smooth operation. The trial fleet includes different models such as Tata Prima trucks and H.55S prime movers, each utilizing either Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine or Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle technology. These trucks are designed to offer sustainable, efficient, and high-performance transportation solutions, boasting operational ranges of 300-500 km. Noteworthy features include premium cabins and advanced safety technologies to enhance driver comfort and productivity.
