Vienna Leads Europe with Hyundai's Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Initiative
Key Ideas
- Wiener Linien introduces Hyundai fuel cell bus, a European first, in collaboration with Slovenian manufacturer TAM.
- The bus features 700-bar hydrogen tanks, producing no greenhouse gas emissions with 90 kW energy and 180 kW electric motor.
- Hyundai bus will be refuelled at Wiener Linien's hydrogen station in Leopoldau, part of Vienna's broader hydrogen mobility initiative.
- Wiener Linien plans to deploy more hydrogen buses in 2025, transitioning to green hydrogen-powered public transportation.
Wiener Linien in Vienna, Austria, has introduced a new Hyundai fuel cell bus, developed in partnership with Slovenian manufacturer TAM. This marks the first time a bus from Hyundai, featuring 700-bar hydrogen tanks, is operating on European roads. The fuel cell on the bus generates 90 kW of energy, powering a 180 kW electric motor, resulting in zero greenhouse gas emissions. The European premiere of this hydrogen fuel cell bus is part of Wiener Linien's initiative to transition to sustainable public transportation. The hydrogen bus will be refuelled at Wiener Linien's hydrogen filling station in Leopoldau, which supports both 350- and 700-bar refuelling, using hydrogen supplied by Wien Energie. This initiative is backed by EU funding through the EBIN program of the Austrian Ministry of Climate Protection. Wiener Linien plans to continue its hydrogen bus transition by deploying more hydrogen buses in 2025, including buses from CaetanoBus and minibuses from Rampini, on various routes in Vienna. This initiative highlights Vienna's commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation in the field of hydrogen-powered transport.
