Ballymena-based manufacturer Wrightbus has unveiled the next generation of cutting-edge diesel buses, the StreetDeck Ultroliner, powered by a Cummins B6.7 diesel engine and Voith DIWA.8 Nxt transmission. These buses, known for ultra-low emissions, are also Ultra-Low Emission Bus (ULEB) accredited. The first batch of five buses will be delivered to Bus Vannin, a government-owned bus service on the Isle of Man. While focusing on diesel technology, Wrightbus is also looking towards hydrogen options for the future. Jean-Marc Gales, the chief executive of Wrightbus, emphasized the efficiency and optimal performance of the new buses, combining the latest engines and technology. He mentioned the importance of maintaining a blended approach to sustainable technologies to cater to customers with varying financial capabilities. This strategy includes offering a potential mid-life repower option to transform diesel buses into zero-emission vehicles through hydrogen internal combustion engines or battery electric powertrains. Bus Vannin's director, Ian Bates, praised the introduction of the new double deck buses, acknowledging the importance of evolving technologies while considering climate change commitments. The controlled approach allows for the exploration of hydrogen options alongside electrification, ensuring a sustainable and forward-thinking fleet. Wrightbus's vision includes ensuring diesel buses are as clean and efficient as possible while paving the way for a future transition to zero-emission vehicles through their NewPower business.
