Ballard Power Systems, a Canadian company, has signed a contract with CPKC to supply 98 hydrogen engines, each delivering 200 kW of power for the railway network in North America. CPKC is at the forefront of developing North America's first hydrogen-powered locomotive as part of efforts to replace diesel engines, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly transport. By combining fuel cells and batteries, these hydrogen-powered systems are designed to reduce carbon emissions and enhance efficiency in rail transport. The partnership between CPKC and CSX Corporation has resulted in the successful modernization of a hydrogen-powered locomotive, with further testing planned until 2025 to ensure technology readiness for extensive deployment.
