Harry Needle Railroad Company, a locomotive hire firm operating in Worksop and Chesterfield, is embarking on a £500,000 project to 'green' its fleet with the support of Frontier Development Capital. The company is testing four innovative technologies to reduce carbon emissions from its fleet of diesel locomotives. One highlighted technology is a hydrogen system that uses generated electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, subsequently injecting hydrogen into the engine to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. The trials have shown significant reductions in CO2 emissions, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde. Other technologies being trialled include catalytic convertors, fuel preheaters, and 'green diesel' made from recycled vegetable oil. These trials aim to find the most effective and cost-efficient configuration of technologies. Harry Needle aims to lead the industry in green technologies, not only within its own fleet but also by assisting other companies in adopting environmentally friendly practices. The company's initiative is supported by Frontier Development Capital, emphasizing the financial viability of investing in eco-friendly locomotives.
