Indian Railways is on the brink of introducing India's first hydrogen-fuelled train, marking a significant step towards sustainable transportation. With an allocation of Rs 2,800 crore, the Ministry of Railways plans to develop a fleet of 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains, positioning India as a leader in green mobility. The train, being built at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route in Northern Railway's Delhi Division, covering 89 km. Noteworthy is its remarkable power capacity of 1,200 horsepower, surpassing existing hydrogen trains globally. The train's fuel cells generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapour, ensuring zero emissions. The project also includes on-ground infrastructure for hydrogen refilling, reinforcing Indian Railways' commitment to cleaner energy. This initiative underscores India's push towards alternative energy-powered transport, promising a cleaner and greener future for the country's transportation sector.
