In a significant move towards sustainable transportation, Indian Railways is embarking on a groundbreaking project to develop the country's first hydrogen train. The Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, revealed this initiative in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, showcasing India's commitment to clean energy innovation. The project entails equipping a diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU) rake with hydrogen fuel cells, a step that positions India to have one of the world's longest and most powerful hydrogen trains. The Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) has meticulously crafted the specifications for this pioneering train, underscoring India's technological prowess in the field. Moreover, the project includes the establishment of essential on-ground infrastructure for hydrogen refilling, with a focus on integrating hydrogen production, storage, and dispensation facilities. Notably, the necessary safety approvals from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) have been secured, ensuring compliance with stringent safety standards. This endeavor symbolizes Indian Railways' proactive stance towards embracing alternative energy sources for a sustainable future.
