Harry Needle Railroad Company is undertaking a project to 'green' its fleet of over 50 diesel locomotives by experimenting with various innovative technologies. Backed by Frontier Development Capital, the £500,000 project aims to reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability in locomotive operations. One of the key technologies being trialled is a hydrogen system called Engine Carbon Clean, which utilizes generated electricity to produce hydrogen for engine operation. This method not only enhances engine efficiency but also reduces emissions significantly. The trial showed promising results with an 8% reduction in CO2 emissions, 27% decrease in carbon monoxide, and a 39% drop in formaldehyde emissions. Additionally, the company is testing catalytic convertors, fuel preheaters, and 'green diesel' made from recycled vegetable oil to further enhance emission reduction while maintaining cost-effectiveness. Harry Needle aims to pioneer the adoption of green technologies within its fleet and assist other companies in transitioning to more sustainable locomotive operations.
