OPmobility Wins Contract to Equip Hydrogen Trains in Italy
Key Ideas
  • OPmobility to equip regional hydrogen trains in Italy with high-pressure hydrogen storage and fuel cell systems by the end of 2025.
  • Development of eight 350-bar high-pressure hydrogen storage systems and four 150 kW fuel cell systems per train.
  • Initial plan to equip 15 hydrogen-powered trains with deliveries expected to increase in the future.
  • Hydrogen trains are efficient in decarbonizing rail mobility due to long range and short charging time.
OPmobility, a company under the former Plastic Omnium, has secured a significant contract from Stadler to equip regional hydrogen trains in Italy with high-pressure hydrogen storage and fuel cell systems by the end of 2025. The project involves the development and industrialization of eight 350-bar high-pressure hydrogen storage systems and four 150 kW fuel cell systems per train. The aim is to initially equip 15 hydrogen-powered trains, with plans to scale up deliveries in the years to come. These hydrogen trains are considered ideal for decarbonizing rail mobility due to their long range and short charging time, making them a sustainable and efficient solution for the transportation sector.
