Revolutionizing Hydrogen Production with Methanol Innovation
Key Ideas
  • Oxylus Energy and Element 1 partner to utilize green methanol for hydrogen production, aiming to repurpose CO2 emissions into a clean hydrogen supply chain.
  • The collaboration targets various applications like hydrogen refueling stations, decentralized power generation, and onboard hydrogen production for different modes of transportation.
  • Partnerships with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and Methanol Reformer further strengthen the development and commercialization of hydrogen solutions through methanol reforming technology.
  • The innovative approach not only helps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also eliminates harmful engine pollutants, contributing positively to environmental sustainability.
U.S. technology start-up Oxylus Energy has teamed up with technology company Element 1 to investigate the use of Oxylus's green methanol as a feedstock for hydrogen production. Element 1 is assessing the potential of utilizing green methanol, produced using Oxylus's CO2-to-methanol technology, for its hydrogen generation units. This partnership aims to enable industrial facilities to convert CO2 emissions into green methanol, which can then be used for downstream hydrogen production, supporting applications such as hydrogen refueling stations and onboard hydrogen production for vehicles, trains, aircraft, and maritime vessels. Perry Bakas, CEO of Oxylus Energy, highlighted the vision of creating a circular economy for carbon dioxide through this collaboration. By leveraging methanol made from recycled CO2, the partnership with Element 1 offers immediate benefits in emissions reduction and the elimination of harmful engine pollutants like PM, NOx, and SOx. Additionally, Element 1 has partnered with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and Methanol Reformer to advance hydrogen solutions through methanol reforming technology. Mitsubishi Gas Chemical will supply methanol feedstock, including circular carbon methanol, leveraging its global presence in the methanol value chain, while Methanol Reformer will contribute manufacturing capabilities for methanol-to-hydrogen generators under Element 1's license. Element 1 will provide its intellectual property and designs for methanol steam reforming and hydrogen purification. These collaborations represent a significant step towards revolutionizing hydrogen production by utilizing methanol innovation to address emissions and enhance environmental sustainability.
