Saft, a French company, has secured a deal to supply lithium titanate oxide (LTO) traction batteries to Siemens Mobility for powering seven Mireo Plus H hydrogen trains in Germany. These batteries will function alongside fuel cells to create a hybrid power system that eliminates the need for diesel usage, allowing the trains to run long distances without emissions. Saft CEO Cedric Duclos highlighted the significance of this contract as the first of its kind for LTO batteries in a major commercial rail project. Each Mireo Plus H train will be equipped with two 100kWh LTO batteries, with the fuel cells primarily powered by hydrogen. The batteries play a crucial role in complementing the fuel cells by providing additional power during acceleration and capturing kinetic energy during braking. During cruising, the batteries facilitate load leveling to ensure the fuel cells operate at peak efficiency.
