Siemens Mobility Introduces Sustainable Transport Solutions in Germany
Key Ideas
  • Siemens Mobility launches Mireo Plus H hydrogen trains in Berlin-Brandenburg, offering a quieter and more efficient alternative to diesel-powered services with significant environmental benefits.
  • The Mireo Plus H trains, powered by locally produced hydrogen, aim to cut CO2 emissions by 3,000 tonnes annually and save 1.1 million litres of diesel fuel in partnership with Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn Betriebsgesellschaft (NEB).
  • The introduction of Mireo Plus B battery trains in the East Brandenburg rail network will see 31 units in service by mid-2025, reducing diesel consumption by 4.4 million litres annually and lowering regional CO2 emissions by 11,500 tonnes.
  • Both train models focus on sustainability, featuring modern amenities, accessibility designs, and innovative solutions to contribute to a greener transportation system in Germany.
Siemens Mobility has announced the introduction of sustainable transport solutions in Germany with the deployment of its Mireo Plus H hydrogen and Mireo Plus B battery trains. The Mireo Plus H hydrogen trains have been authorized for passenger operation and will debut on the Heidekrautbahn line in Berlin-Brandenburg, offering a quieter and more efficient alternative to diesel-powered services. These trains, with a range of 1,200 kilometers and a top speed of 160 km/h, will be operated by Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn Betriebsgesellschaft (NEB), aiming to cut CO2 emissions by 3,000 tonnes annually and save 1.1 million litres of diesel fuel. Locally produced hydrogen will power the trains, with water vapor as the only emission. Additionally, the Mireo Plus H will operate in Bavaria to replace diesel propulsion, with plans to fully phase out diesel trains by 2040, significantly reducing environmental impact. On the other hand, Siemens' Mireo Plus B battery trains are set to replace diesel trains in the East Brandenburg rail network, targeting a substantial reduction in diesel consumption and regional CO2 emissions. These trains focus on sustainability, offering features such as accessibility designs, WiFi, and dynamic passenger information systems. The innovative approach by Siemens Mobility aims to create a more sustainable and eco-friendly regional transport system in Germany.
