Sierra Northern Railway has made a significant move in the railway industry by acquiring the assets of locomotive builder RailPower LLC with the goal of developing hydrogen and other low-emission motive power. While RailPower has a history of producing hybrid switchers and generator set locomotives, Sierra Northern is focusing on advancing hydrogen-powered locomotives. Despite the absence of federal standards for such locomotives, the Federal Railroad Administration is providing guidance for alternative-power technology. Sierra Northern plans to combine RailPower's hybrid innovations with its hydrogen expertise, targeting the development of hydrogen locomotives for shortline railroads in California. The project is supported by the California Energy Commission and the California State Transportation Agency, indicating a positive outlook for sustainable transportation solutions. Additionally, Sierra Northern's subsidiary, Sierra Energy Corp., has developed waste-to-clean-hydrogen gasification technology, aligning with the company's commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation in the clean energy sector.
