GreenGo Energy has signed an agreement for the Megaton Moon green hydrogen project in Mauritania, marking its first venture in Africa. The agreement grants access to over 100,000 hectares near Nouakchott for the project's development. The project will encompass 6GW of electrolysis, 6.8GW of onshore wind, and 6.3GWp of solar photovoltaic capacity, with phase one expected to deploy 500MW of electrolysis, 600MW of onshore wind, and 600MWp of solar PV, producing 339,000t of green ammonia annually. Mauritania's advantages for green hydrogen production include abundant solar and wind resources, coastal access for water desalination and export, and lower production costs than in northern Europe. GreenGo Energy will finance the project through a partnership model involving strategic investors and plans to address water, power, and resource shortages, transforming Nouakchott and surrounding areas into hubs of green industrial and urban development. The project aims to provide socioeconomic progress in Mauritania, with a partnership for education and vocational training programs for the local workforce. CEO Karsten Nielsen expressed excitement about the project, highlighting Mauritania's renewable resources, favorable policies, and competitive production costs.
