Hyundai Motor India Ltd. is collaborating with the State government-backed investment promotion agency Guidance Tamil Nadu and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras to establish a dedicated Hydrogen Innovation Centre in Chennai. The centre, to be set up at the Thaiyur campus of IIT Madras with an investment of Rs 180 crore, will focus on research in hydrogen technology. This partnership, initiated during the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave, aims to accelerate the development and adoption of the hydrogen ecosystem in India. The Hydrogen Innovation Centre will play a pivotal role in driving innovations in hydrogen technology, supporting startups and researchers, and creating a robust framework for the advancement of hydrogen mobility. The facility will work on electrolyser development for green hydrogen generation, localization of manufacturing and supply chain, and will house a fuel cell test station along with pilot demonstrators using electrolyzers and fuel cells. The collaboration signifies Hyundai Motor India's commitment to supporting the Tamil Nadu government's vision of establishing a sustainable ecosystem for transitioning towards alternate fuels. With a planned operational timeline by 2026, the Hydrogen Innovation Centre is poised to contribute significantly to the growth of hydrogen technology and mobility in Tamil Nadu. This strategic initiative reflects the parties' shared goal of fostering innovation, sustainability, and technological advancement in the automotive sector.
