The shipping industry is aiming to reduce its air emissions by adopting innovative technologies and fostering collaboration among stakeholders. Madadh MacLaine, the founder and secretary general of the Association of Zero Emissions Ship Technology, highlighted the importance of wind power, hydrogen fuel cells, and battery systems in achieving absolute zero emissions during the Riviera’s Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cell Conference in Bergen, Norway. It is essential for all stakeholders to align their efforts towards decarbonisation, including owners, charterers, technology providers, and energy generators. The establishment of up to 10 bunkering points in the Baltic region is planned to support zero-emissions shortsea shipping, with multiple owners showing commitment to this goal. Ms. MacLaine emphasized the need for collaborative efforts and forums to implement these technologies and investments. Additionally, the upcoming Riviera’s Maritime Decarbonisation Conference Asia in Singapore will address decarbonisation strategies, regulations, technologies, and supply chain maturity for the shipping industry in Asia.
