Malaysia Supports Sarawak's Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Goals
Key Ideas
  • Malaysia fully supports Sarawak's goal of expanding renewable energy capacity to 15 gigawatts by 2035 and becoming a regional hydrogen production hub.
  • Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof ensures integration of Sarawak's energy transition initiatives into national development plans.
  • Strategic initiatives by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation include large-scale solar power plant development and promotion of solar energy adoption.
  • Collaboration with foreign partners, like South Korea, will enable the establishment of a hydrogen production plant in Sarawak by 2027.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, expressed full federal government support for Sarawak's energy transition objectives. This includes backing the state's plan to boost its renewable energy capacity to 15 gigawatts by 2035 and become a regional hydrogen production hub. Sarawak's hydrogen hub, expected to be completed by 2027 with collaborations from foreign partners like South Korea, aims to establish a hydrogen production plant. The integration of Sarawak's energy transition initiatives into national development plans is a priority for the government. Strategic measures such as the development of large-scale solar power plants under the Large-Scale Solar (LSS) program and promotions like the Net Energy Metering (NEM) and Solar for Self-Consumption (SelCo) initiatives are actively pursued to achieve the 40% renewable energy target. Additionally, schemes like the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) and Feed-in Tariff (FiT) are in place to further support renewable energy projects. The collaborative approach with regulatory agencies and stakeholders in Sarawak indicates a positive stance towards supporting the state's renewable energy and hydrogen ambitions.
