Mitsui & Co Partners with ADNOC to Build Ammonia Plant in UAE for Clean Energy Production
Key Ideas
  • Mitsui & Co, along with partners like ADNOC, is constructing an ammonia plant in the UAE to produce 1 million metric tons per year of cleaner ammonia by 2027.
  • The project aims to reduce CO2 emissions by capturing and storing CO2 during the manufacturing process, with plans to begin production of clean ammonia by 2030.
  • Mitsui will distribute the clean ammonia to Japan and other Asian markets for various uses like fuel, chemical, and fertilizer feedstock.
  • The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) has signed a loan agreement with Mitsui, co-financed with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp, to support this sustainable energy initiative.
Mitsui & Co has initiated the construction of an ammonia plant in the United Arab Emirates in partnership with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to promote cleaner energy production. The project, located in Al Ruwais, aims to produce 1 million metric tons of ammonia annually starting from 2027. By implementing measures to capture and store CO2 emissions during the manufacturing process, the plant plans to transition to producing clean ammonia by 2030, contributing to a reduction in carbon footprint. Mitsui intends to use the clean ammonia for various purposes in Japan and other Asian markets, including as fuel, chemical feedstock, and fertilizer. Additionally, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) has provided financial support for the project by signing a loan agreement with Mitsui, furthering the development of sustainable energy solutions. This initiative signifies a step towards building global supply chains for greener fuels like hydrogen and ammonia to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability.
