Sarawak is aiming to establish itself as a prominent green hydrogen producer in Southeast Asia, with various projects valued at approximately USD4.2 billion in progress. The state government, led by Tanjong Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan, is actively pursuing amendments to regulate the production, storage, and distribution of hydrogen to support the burgeoning industry. These initiatives are crucial to protecting the rights and interests of Sarawak in the hydrogen market. Partnerships are being formed to develop large-scale hydrogen plants at strategic locations like the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub in Bintulu and the Rembus Depot near Kuching. The proposed amendments seek to establish a robust legal framework encompassing certification, design and permitting, procurement, and construction phases to ensure the safe and efficient operation of hydrogen projects. Azizul outlined a four-step process that includes certification, design and permitting, procurement for a reliable supply chain, and construction with a focus on quality assurance. These steps are essential for the successful management and operation of hydrogen assets. By emphasizing sustainability, safety, and efficiency, Sarawak is poised to lead the region in green hydrogen production and contribute significantly to the transition towards cleaner energy sources.
