Singapore's Largest Hydrogen-Ready Power Plant on Jurong Island
Key Ideas
- Singapore's EMA awards PacificLight Power Pte Ltd the right to build a 600 MW hydrogen-ready power plant on Jurong Island.
- The facility, set to operate from January 2029, will be the largest and most efficient of its kind in Singapore.
- The plant aims to use 30% hydrogen initially and transition to 100% hydrogen in the future, contributing to a low-carbon future.
- PacificLight Power plans to integrate hydrogen-ready and battery storage technologies to support the transition to a sustainable energy mix.
Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA) has granted PacificLight Power Pte Ltd (PLP) the opportunity to construct a cutting-edge hydrogen-ready Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) facility on Jurong Island. The 600 megawatt (MW) power plant, slated to begin operations in January 2029, is set to become the largest and most advanced H-class CCGT in Singapore. Featuring a large-scale battery energy storage system, the plant will initially incorporate at least 30% hydrogen in its operations and has future plans to shift to 100% hydrogen. This move aligns with PacificLight Power's commitment to a sustainable future, combining hydrogen-ready and battery storage technologies to facilitate a smooth transition towards a low-carbon energy landscape. The site on Jurong Island also has the potential to host a second CCGT unit and Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) technology. PacificLight Power's CEO, Yu Tat Ming, expressed the company's dedication to delivering the new plant safely and on schedule. This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing Singapore's energy infrastructure and fostering environmental sustainability.
