Viking and shipbuilder Fincantieri have announced plans for the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra, which is currently under construction at Fincantieri's Ancona facility and set to join the fleet in late 2026. With a commitment to environmentally responsible cruising, the Viking Libra, around 54,300 gross tons, will accommodate 998 guests in 499 staterooms, maintaining Viking's preference for smaller ships. The vessel's propulsion technology, a hybrid system combining liquefied hydrogen and fuel cell systems, allows for zero-emission operations when needed, providing access to environmentally sensitive areas. The six-megawatt power capacity will be generated through this state-of-the-art system developed by Fincantieri's subsidiary, Isotta Fraschini Motori. Pierroberto Folgiero, Fincantieri's CEO, expressed excitement over Viking's decision to incorporate hydrogen technology in the cruise industry and underlined the reinforcement of their partnership through additional ship orders and shared sustainability goals. Following the Viking Libra, the cruise line plans to introduce the Viking Astrea, another hydrogen-powered vessel, in 2027, as part of their growth strategy that includes expanding their fleet significantly by 2031. Viking's commitment to sustainable luxury and environmentally friendly practices is at the forefront of this innovative venture, marking a significant step towards a greener cruise industry.
