During Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2025 in the United Arab Emirates, Francesco La Camera, the director general of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), highlighted the crucial role of interconnectivity in advancing renewable energy development in Central Asia. He emphasized the potential of the region to reduce electricity costs, produce green hydrogen, and export energy to Europe, stressing the importance of strengthening connections within Central Asia and linking to the European market. La Camera also noted Azerbaijan's efforts to enhance energy infrastructure and the evolving cross-border energy flows facilitated by agreements like the one between Albania and Italy. Central Asia was recognized for its vast opportunities in solar and hydrogen production, with La Camera underlining the region's potential to foster a new energy system. He discussed the global shift towards renewables, including the complementary roles of green hydrogen and sustainable biomass. The interview also praised China's advancements in renewable energy and storage technologies, highlighting the country's leadership in areas like battery storage and electric vehicles. La Camera called for strategic investments in infrastructure and grid modernization to support the transition to renewables. He stressed the importance of international cooperation and public awareness in creating a sustainable energy ecosystem. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's attendance at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Summit and discussions with various stakeholders underscored the urgent need to address global climate challenges.
