European Commission Allocates €1.25bn for Energy Infrastructure Projects
Key Ideas
  • European Commission allocates nearly €1.25bn in grants to 41 cross-border energy infrastructure projects, including key wind energy projects.
  • CEF funding round supports offshore electricity grids, hydrogen, and CO2 networks to accelerate decarbonisation across the EU.
  • Good news for offshore wind projects like Bornholm Energy Island, Triton Link, and South Brittany wind connection.
  • Concerns raised over limited funding for electricity grids projects amidst the need to boost electrification and renewable energy integration.
The European Commission has allocated almost €1.25bn in grants under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to support 41 cross-border energy infrastructure projects, including three significant wind energy-related projects. This funding round marks a milestone as it was the first to include offshore electricity grids, hydrogen, and CO2 networks, aiming to integrate European energy markets and accelerate decarbonisation across the EU. The allocation round awarded over €850mn to Projects of Common Interest and Projects of Mutual Interest under the revised Trans-European Network for Energy regulation. Notably, projects like the Bornholm Energy Island, Triton Link, and a wind connection in South Brittany, France, received grants, emphasizing the importance of offshore wind initiatives in creating an integrated grid. Offshore hybrids, which combine offshore wind farms with interconnectors, play a crucial role in optimizing energy flows and reducing environmental impact. However, concerns were raised over the limited funding for electricity grids projects, as only three smart grid projects received a small percentage of the total budget. The focus on hydrogen, ammonia, and CO2 projects, while crucial, highlighted the need for more investment in grid infrastructure to support Europe's clean energy ambitions. The article stresses the importance of prioritizing proven and ready-to-use solutions such as electricity grid infrastructure and renewables-based electrification to ensure an effective and affordable energy transition. With the EU Action Plan for Grids estimating a significant investment need in electricity grids by 2030, there is a call for stronger EU support and additional funding tools to optimize and expand national electricity grids. The next CEF funding round in 2025 is expected to prioritize more electricity grid projects to maximize the benefits of clean and affordable power for consumers and enhance climate ambitions.
