Genevos Joins Consortium for Hydrogen-Powered Fishing Vessel Innovation in Europe
Key Ideas
- Genevos, a French hydrogen technology integration leader, partners with a consortium for a hydrogen-electric fishing vessel project in Europe.
- The project aims to demonstrate energy efficiency, zero emissions, and low sound pollution in the marine environment.
- By 2026, a 12m fishing vessel with hydrogen fuel cell power systems will be tested across three countries, aligning with EU's environmental targets.
- The initiative supports Sustainable Development Goals by promoting cleaner and sustainable practices in the maritime sector.
Genevos, a French company specializing in integrating hydrogen technologies in the maritime sector, has announced its collaboration with a consortium of specialists for an innovative project involving a hydrogen-powered fishing vessel. The consortium includes Riga Technical University, A2Z Gannet SIA shipyard from Latvia, and the Stockholm Environment Institute Tallinn Centre from Estonia, among others. Genevos will be responsible for designing and delivering the complete energy system engineering for the project, incorporating marine certified hydrogen fuel cell power systems and gas storage. The initiative aims to design, construct, and demonstrate the operational effectiveness of a 12m fishing vessel propelled by a 100 kW e-engine powered by hydrogen-electric technology. The project's primary goal is to showcase enhanced energy efficiency, zero emissions, and minimal sound pollution in the demanding marine environment. Set to commence in 2026, the prototype vessel will be deployed in three countries to validate its performance and environmental benefits, in line with the European Union's ambitious environmental objectives. By promoting the adoption of greener and more efficient technologies in small-scale fisheries, the project aims to reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and acoustic noise. Ultimately, the initiative seeks to contribute to the European Green Deal and the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 by advancing sustainable practices in the maritime sector and enhancing marine biodiversity. The project aligns with Sustainable Development Goals, particularly focusing on ocean conservation, clean water, and climate action, with a vision to restore and protect the health of oceans, seas, and waters by 2030.
