TAP Pipeline Explores Hydrogen Integration Potential in Southern Europe
Key Ideas
  • Trans Adriatic Pipeline AG collaborates with Penspen to assess hydrogen integration on the TAP pipeline in southern Europe.
  • The analysis aims to explore the possibility of introducing hydrogen blends to enhance the pipeline's capacity and support regional decarbonization efforts.
  • The TAP pipeline, a vital part of the Southern Gas Corridor, connects Albania and the Adriatic Sea to southern Italy, contributing to Europe's energy security.
Trans Adriatic Pipeline AG (TAP) has partnered with Penspen to conduct a hydrogen gap analysis for the 877-km natural gas pipeline in southern Europe. The UK team at Penspen is conducting a thorough review of TAP's aboveground installations, block valves, and compressor stations to assess the feasibility of integrating hydrogen blends into the existing gas line. This initiative not only aims to potentially increase the pipeline's capacity but also aligns with the goal of decarbonizing the region. The TAP pipeline, operational since the end of 2020, plays a crucial role in the Southern Gas Corridor, enhancing Europe's energy security and diversifying its supply network. By exploring the introduction of hydrogen along its route, TAP demonstrates a commitment to sustainable energy solutions and contributes to the broader efforts of transitioning towards cleaner fuel sources.
