TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Collaborate to Produce Green Hydrogen in Europe
Key Ideas
- TotalEnergies and Air Liquide partner to develop two projects in the Netherlands producing 45,000t of green hydrogen annually, reducing CO2 emissions.
- Projects align with European renewable energy targets in transport and involve the use of renewable energy from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm.
- A joint venture will construct and operate a 250MW electrolyser near the Zeeland refinery, aiming to cut CO2 emissions by 300,000t annually.
- Additional collaboration includes a tolling agreement for Air Liquide's electrolyser project in Maasvlakte, set to reduce CO2 emissions by 150,000t annually in Antwerp.
TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have joined forces to work towards decarbonising the hydrogen used in TotalEnergies' European refineries by 2030. The collaboration involves the development of two projects in the Netherlands that will collectively produce 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This initiative aims to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from TotalEnergies' refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands by up to 450,000t annually, in line with European renewable energy targets in the transportation sector.
The green hydrogen will be generated using renewable energy sources, primarily sourced from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and RWE. A key aspect of the partnership is the establishment of a joint venture, equally held by TotalEnergies and Air Liquide, to construct and operate a 250MW electrolyser near the Zeeland refinery. This electrolyser, scheduled for commissioning in 2029, is expected to substantially cut the site's CO2 emissions by up to 300,000t annually.
TotalEnergies' President of refining and chemicals, Vincent Stoquart, emphasized the significance of these collaborations in achieving the company's decarbonization goals. The overall investment for these projects amounts to €600m ($627.3m), with additional funding being sought from European and national subsidy programs.
Furthermore, TotalEnergies has signed a tolling agreement for Air Liquide's 200MW ELYgator electrolyser project in Maasvlakte, the Netherlands. This agreement will facilitate the production of 15,000t of green hydrogen annually for TotalEnergies' Antwerp platform, contributing to a reduction of 150,000t of CO2 emissions at the site by the end of 2027.
