TotalEnergies and RWE Partnership for Green Hydrogen Decarbonisation in Germany
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies partners with RWE to supply 30,000 tpy of green hydrogen to the Leuna refinery in Germany starting in 2030.
  • The green hydrogen will be produced by a 300 MW electrolyser in Lingen, with storage provided locally and delivery via a 600 km pipeline, reducing CO2 emissions by 300,000 t annually.
  • TotalEnergies aims to decarbonise its European refineries using low-carbon hydrogen, contracting over 200,000 tpy for various sites across France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands by 2030.
  • The partnership showcases the commitment to green hydrogen and the positive impact of hydrogen in reducing CO2 emissions in industrial processes.
TotalEnergies has entered into an agreement with RWE to decarbonise the hydrogen used in its European refineries, focusing on the Leuna refinery in Germany. Starting in 2030, 30,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen will be supplied to the Leuna refinery, produced by a 300 MW electrolyser facility in Lingen operated by RWE. The green hydrogen will be stored locally and transported via a 600 km pipeline to the refinery, effectively reducing the site's CO2 emissions by 300,000 tonnes annually. This initiative marks a significant step towards TotalEnergies' goal of reducing its annual CO2 emissions by around 3 million tonnes by 2030 through the utilization of low-carbon hydrogen. The company has already secured contracts for over 200,000 tonnes per year of green and renewable hydrogen for various refineries in France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The partnership between TotalEnergies and RWE underscores the positive impact of green hydrogen in decarbonising industrial processes and signifies a commitment to sustainability and energy transition in the European refinery sector.
