Gujarat, a state in India, has marked a significant step towards establishing itself as a prominent hub for green hydrogen production by granting in-principle approval for a massive renewable energy park sprawling over 1.99 lakh hectares. The ambitious initiative aims to achieve an annual production target of 30 lakh tonnes of green hydrogen. Governor Acharya Devvrat publicized this strategic move in the Legislative Assembly, emphasizing Gujarat's commitment to embracing green energy practices. To support this transition, the state has implemented a land lease policy for solar, wind, and hybrid energy sources. At the 2024 Vibrant Gujarat Summit, agreements exceeding Rs 3 lakh crore were inked specifically for green hydrogen ventures, underlining the state's substantial investments in renewable energy. Gujarat's renewable energy goals necessitate approximately 100 GW of renewable energy capacity to fulfill the ambitious green hydrogen production targets. In addition to focusing on green hydrogen projects, Gujarat is diligently working on enhancing its interstate transmission system (ISTS) and expanding the Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Ltd (GETCO) network. The state is also in the process of establishing new renewable energy parks with a collective capacity of 37,000 MW, showcasing a clear commitment to bolstering renewable energy infrastructure. Gujarat currently leads the nation in electricity generation, boasting a total installed capacity of 57,664 MW, out of which 31,483 MW is derived from renewable sources. This progressive approach positions Gujarat as a frontrunner in the renewable energy sector, setting a commendable example for sustainable energy development.
