Honeywell and AM Green Partner to Drive Sustainable Aviation Fuel Innovation in India
Key Ideas
  • Honeywell and AM Green sign MoU to promote carbon capture and sustainable aviation fuel in India, aligning with the country's goals for SAF blends in jet fuel.
  • The collaboration focuses on decarbonising aviation and shipping sectors by evaluating the feasibility of producing SAF from ethanol, green methanol, and green hydrogen from CO2 emissions.
  • The partnership aims to enhance India's energy security, enable it to become a global green methanol exporter, and help airlines meet CORSIA mandates for low-carbon fuel replacements.
  • The initiative is set to create opportunities for Indian farmers through increased demand for ethanol feedstocks while supporting the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with a feasibility study to be completed by mid-2025.
Honeywell and AM Green have formed a partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to drive the adoption of carbon capture and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in India. This collaboration is in line with India's target to achieve a one percent SAF blend in jet fuel for international flights by 2027 and two percent by 2028. The agreement, which was formalized during India Energy Week, focuses on decarbonising the aviation and shipping sectors. The primary focus of the collaboration is to assess the viability of producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using ethanol, green methanol derived from carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and green hydrogen. By exploring these innovative solutions, the companies aim to strengthen India's energy security and position the country as a major exporter of green methanol for the shipping industry. Additionally, this initiative will aid airlines in meeting CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) mandates by offering low-carbon and drop-in fuel alternatives. The partnership is also expected to generate new opportunities for Indian farmers as it will drive up the demand for ethanol feedstocks. Moreover, this venture will lend support to the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The feasibility study, slated for completion by mid-2025, is a crucial step towards large-scale decarbonisation efforts in the region.
