Key Ideas
  • Indian Railways aims to become a 'net zero carbon emitter' by 2030, with the introduction of hydrogen trains as a key step.
  • The first hydrogen train is set to run on the Jind-Sonipat route in Delhi Division, with testing scheduled to begin by the end of the current year.
  • The project includes plans to run 35 hydrogen trains on heritage and hilly routes, contributing to environmental benefits and sustainable transportation.
  • Significant budget allocation of Rs 2800 crore has been made for the hydrogen train project, demonstrating a commitment to green initiatives.
Indian Railways is embarking on a significant initiative to reduce carbon emissions by introducing hydrogen trains as part of its strategy to become a 'net zero carbon emitter' by 2030. The first hydrogen train is expected to commence operations in the 2024-25 financial year, with testing scheduled to begin later this year. The train will run on the 89 km long Jind-Sonipat route in the Delhi Division of Northern Railway. This project, named 'Hydrogen for Heritage', aims to eventually operate 35 hydrogen trains on heritage and hilly routes, promoting eco-friendly transportation. Hydrogen trains are praised for their environmental benefits as they produce zero pollution, aligning with Indian Railways' goal of achieving carbon neutrality. The railway sector is implementing various green initiatives, including the use of power-saving technologies, LED lights, low-power equipment, and tree planting. Additionally, solar plants are being installed at stations and on railway land to further reduce the carbon footprint. A substantial budget of Rs 2800 crore has been allocated for the hydrogen train project, emphasizing the commitment towards sustainable infrastructure development. Separate funding of Rs 600 crore has been assigned for hydrogen-related infrastructure on heritage routes. Indian Railways is also undertaking a project to convert a diesel-powered train into a hydrogen-based train, with the installation of hydrogen fuel cells and necessary infrastructure upgrades. This ambitious hydrogen train project not only signifies a positive step towards environmental conservation but also positions India as a leader in green transportation.
