India's Green Steel Mission: Driving Carbon Reduction and Domestic Production Growth
Key Ideas
- The Indian government launches a Rs 15,000 crore 'Green Steel Mission' to curb carbon emissions in the steel sector, a significant contributor to the country's total emissions.
- Measures under the mission include a production linked incentive for green steel, promoting renewable energy, and mandating green steel procurement by government entities.
- Collaboration with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy for the 'National Green Hydrogen Mission' aims to boost the use of green hydrogen in steel production.
- A PLI scheme for specialty steel is introduced to reduce reliance on imports, with companies committing to invest Rs 27,106 crore to produce 7.90 million tonnes of specialty steel.
The Indian government has initiated a Rs 15,000 crore 'Green Steel Mission' to address the carbon emissions from the steel sector, which accounts for 10-12 percent of the country's total emissions. The mission includes incentives such as a production linked incentive (PLI) for green steel, encouragement for renewable energy adoption, and a directive for government bodies to procure green steel. This aligns with India's decarbonisation objectives and involves collaboration between the Ministry of Steel and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy for the 'National Green Hydrogen Mission,' aiming to enhance the utilization of green hydrogen in steel manufacturing. A budget of Rs 455 crore has been allocated for pilot projects under this initiative until FY2029-30.
The government has also introduced a PLI scheme for specialty steel to decrease dependency on imports. Companies involved in this scheme have committed to investing Rs 27,106 crore to produce 7.90 million tonnes of specialty steel. Notably, as of October 2024, investments totaling Rs 17,581 crore have already been made, creating over 8,660 job opportunities. Despite India's abundant reserves of iron ore and non-coking coal, there has been a rise in coking coal imports, reaching 58.12 million metric tonnes in 2023-24 from 51.20 million metric tonnes in 2020-21, with 30.19 million metric tonnes imported during April-September 2024. The Steel Ministry remains dedicated to reducing emissions and enhancing domestic steel production to meet the country's increasing demand sustainably.
