NTPC recently unveiled its Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh, marking a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transport. The project, inaugurated by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal, includes the introduction of hydrogen-fueled buses designed to operate in challenging conditions at an altitude of 11,562 feet. These buses can cover a distance of 300 km on a single hydrogen refill and are capable of functioning in sub-zero temperatures and low-density air. The initiative also incorporates a hydrogen fueling station with an 80 kg per day capacity, powered by a 1.7 MW solar plant. The primary objective of the project is to diminish carbon emissions by 350 metric tons annually while generating oxygen equivalent to planting 13,000 trees. The Minister, during the launch, demonstrated the practicality of the buses by traveling 12 km in one of them, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting renewable energy sources, particularly in remote regions like Ladakh. The unique combination of high solar potential and cold climate in the area makes it an ideal location for generating and utilizing green hydrogen. This project aligns with NTPC's broader strategy to expand its renewable energy capacity to 60 GW by 2032, with a specific focus on green hydrogen technologies across India, including plans for a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh. By addressing logistical and environmental challenges in remote areas, NTPC aims to demonstrate how renewable energy and hydrogen can synergize to create sustainable energy solutions for the future.
