The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has reiterated Europe's commitment to deepening ties with India through the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). This corridor, envisioned as a modern golden road directly connecting India, the Arabian Gulf, and Europe, is aimed at enhancing trade efficiency and connectivity. During a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, key areas of collaboration were discussed, including plans for a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement, investment protection, a Green Hydrogen Forum, semiconductor technology, AI, high-performance computing, and a space dialogue. Von der Leyen also expressed the EU's interest in establishing a Security and Defence Partnership with India to counter various security challenges. She welcomed India's interest in joining EU defense industrial projects and emphasized the importance of closer collaboration. The IMEC, launched in 2023, is more than just a railway or cable; it is described as a green and digital bridge across continents and civilisations that will strengthen trade in batteries, clean hydrogen, and digital services. The vision for IMEC includes a rail link to make trade between India and Europe 40% faster, an electricity cable, a clean hydrogen pipeline, and a high-speed data cable to link innovative digital ecosystems.
