Tata Motors has initiated trials for hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks to assess their suitability for long-distance transportation solutions in India. The 24-month trial involves deploying 16 advanced hydrogen-powered trucks equipped with Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines and Fuel Cell technologies on major freight routes in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, and more. The Executive Director of Tata Motors highlighted the importance of exploring hydrogen technology for heavy-duty, long-haul transportation, emphasizing the need for viable alternatives to battery electric technology. The company aims to gather real-life feedback on the performance and commercial viability of hydrogen-powered trucks through these trials. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, has awarded Tata Motors the tender for this trial run. Government officials, including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, have praised the initiative for its potential to reduce emissions, enhance energy self-reliance, and drive innovation in the transportation sector. This endeavor reflects Tata Motors' commitment to exploring alternative fuel technologies like hydrogen to achieve sustainable and low-carbon transportation solutions.
