Austria's Green Revolution: Industrial Hydrogen Valley Project
Key Ideas
  • Austria launches the Industrial Hydrogen Valley project to decarbonize industries and transition to clean energy, aiming to produce 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2028.
  • The project, supported by the EU with an initial grant of €20 million, will target over 18,000 tonnes of green hydrogen production by 2030, with investments expected to reach €578 million.
  • Focused on industrial zones in Styria, Upper Austria, and Carinthia, the initiative covers the entire green hydrogen value chain, benefiting energy-intensive sectors like steel, cement, and raw materials industries.
  • The plan includes sub-projects for production, transportation, storage, and industrial applications, with 56% focus on industrial applications, 23% on energy, and 21% on mobility.
Austria has begun the Industrial Hydrogen Valley (HI2-Valley) project in Vienna to revolutionize its industrial sector and accelerate the shift towards clean energy. The project's aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate around 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen yearly by 2028. With backing from the European Union, the endeavor will kick off in industrial zones spread across three Austrian states: Styria, Upper Austria, and Carinthia. An initial EU fund of €20 million has been dedicated to the initiative, with total investments anticipated to amount to €578 million by 2030, targeting an annual production exceeding 18,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. The project envisions sub-projects encompassing the complete green hydrogen value chain, involving production, transportation, storage, and usage in industries. This venture will comprise six projects in Styria, six in Upper Austria, and five in Carinthia, focusing mainly on industrial applications (56%), followed by energy (23%) and mobility (21%). Key sectors such as steel, cement, and raw materials industries are poised to gain substantial benefits from transitioning to green hydrogen.
