Mass production of hydrogen-powered trams destined for Malaysia has started in China, with CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute Co., Ltd. in Yibin overseeing the project. These trams are equipped with a hydrogen energy system that improves their range and reduces refueling time significantly. The first model was sent to Malaysia for testing in 2023, with subsequent enhancements made to the series, including autonomous operation and features for passenger convenience. Malaysia has ordered 38 of these smart hydrogen trams, with 17 expected to be operational by the end of 2025, marking a milestone in the country's transport infrastructure development. This sustainable mode of transportation is gaining traction globally, evidenced by South Korea's contract with Hyundai Rotem for hydrogen trams. Despite a temporary suspension of China's first hydrogen tram line due to low passenger numbers, the advancements in hydrogen fuel technologies in Malaysia and South Korea may pave the way for success in the future. The railway industry is witnessing a shift towards innovative and eco-friendly transport solutions, with hydrogen-powered trams playing a pivotal role in enhancing public transportation systems.
