The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has pledged $3 million in funding to the Barwon Region Water Corporation (Barwon Water) for the Green Oxygen for Wastewater Treatment project in Geelong. Barwon Water plans to utilize pure oxygen obtained as a byproduct of electrolysis to optimize water treatment processes at its Northern Water Plant and decrease emissions from wastewater treatment. The project, supported by ARENA, aims to demonstrate how renewable hydrogen producers and wastewater treatment entities can collaborate to decarbonize, showcasing the mutual benefits of transitioning to clean energy. By conducting a front-end engineering and design study in two stages, Barwon Water will assess the feasibility of incorporating pure oxygen from an electrolyser into its wastewater treatment, sourced from the nearby Viva Energy Hub's 2.5-megawatt electrolyser. Additionally, the project seeks to quantify potential revenue streams for renewable hydrogen producers through oxygen sales. With over 1,200 wastewater treatment plants in Australia contributing significantly to emissions, the outcomes of this project could pave the way for innovative enhancements in the sector. Barwon Water's Managing Director expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the pursuit of innovative solutions for environmental challenges. The collaboration between Barwon Water and Viva Energy, facilitated by ARENA funding, showcases the potential for leveraging green oxygen in wastewater treatment to reduce environmental impact.
