Hyundai Trials Mighty Fuel Cell Truck with Key Customers in New Zealand
Key Ideas
  • Hyundai Motors NZ is testing the Mighty Fuel Cell truck, a smaller hydrogen vehicle with a refrigerated fitout, for a year with 'key customers'.
  • The Mighty Fuel Cell truck features a 90kW fuel cell stack, 65kW electric motor, and 21kWh battery, offering a 500km range and quick refueling time.
  • Partnerships with Hiringa Energy and Halcyon Power support the deployment with green hydrogen production on-site at refueling stations in New Zealand.
  • Hyundai's Xcient Fuel Cell truck, operating locally with NZ Post, has already traveled over 90,000km, showing the success of hydrogen-powered transportation.
Hyundai Motors New Zealand is embarking on a 12-month pilot test program with the Mighty Fuel Cell hydrogen light-duty truck on New Zealand roads, targeting 'key customers'. The truck, which is smaller than the Xcient Fuel Cell heavy-duty truck introduced in 2021, includes a refrigerated fitout that also operates on power generated by the fuel cell. Equipped with a 90kW fuel cell stack, 65kW electric motor, and 21kWh battery, the prototype Mighty Fuel Cell truck offers a driving range of around 500km and a quick refueling time of 5-10 minutes. Hyundai has partnered with Hiringa Energy and Halcyon Power to facilitate the deployment by providing green hydrogen for the truck's operation. The hydrogen will primarily be produced on-site at refueling stations using water and renewable electricity, taking advantage of low energy demand periods for production. Additionally, Hyundai's Xcient Fuel Cell truck, which has been in full commercial operation with NZ Post since 2023, has proven its capabilities by covering over 90,000km on local roads, showcasing the viability and success of hydrogen-powered transportation in New Zealand.
