The Indian government, through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, has announced its initiative to establish Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for research and development in Green Hydrogen. The objective of setting up these CoEs under the National Green Hydrogen Mission is to promote innovation and sustainability in the field, with a specific focus on enhancing energy independence in the long term. With a budget allocation of Rs 100 crore, the CoEs will accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy by advancing technologies related to Green Hydrogen production, storage, and utilization. The government aims for these centres to act as hubs for cutting-edge research, skill development, and knowledge dissemination. By facilitating collaboration among various stakeholders including industry, academia, and government, the CoEs will drive innovations in Green Hydrogen technologies, leading to improved efficiencies and new product developments. The broader National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 with significant funding, is part of India's strategy to achieve self-reliance through clean energy and set an example for global clean energy transitions. The initiative also aligns with India's goal of combating climate change and reducing the country's reliance on crude oil imports. The Ministry's guidelines for the R&D Scheme under the National Green Hydrogen Mission emphasize the importance of India's entry into green hydrogen, green ammonia, and energy storage sectors for holistic benefits. By leveraging expertise and resources effectively, these CoEs will advance the entire Green Hydrogen ecosystem in the country, contributing to energy independence and global sustainability efforts.
