Mars Petcare's facility in Wodonga, Victoria, aims to become Australia's first large-scale steam-based manufacturing site operating entirely on renewable energy by 2026. In partnership with CSIRO, the company plans to transition to 100% renewable power, incorporating solar, thermal energy technologies, and hydrogen. A significant aspect of this transition is the implementation of an $39 million Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) project, partially funded by ARENA. This project includes an 18MW parabolic trough CST plant with thermal energy storage capabilities, along with an electrical thermal energy system (eTES) component by Graphite Energy. These technologies enable the facility to utilize renewable electricity for heat generation, replacing the need for gas. The collaboration between CSIRO, Mars, and Graphite Energy has been crucial in achieving Mars Wodonga's goal of a completely renewable solution by 2026. Additionally, Mars has partnered with the Australian Gas Infrastructure Group to procure Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin certificates at Hydrogen Park Murray Valley, further reducing its gas consumption. This shift towards renewable energy not only aligns with Mars' sustainability objectives but also sets a significant example for Australia's manufacturing sector, which heavily relies on process heat and energy consumption.
