Asahi Kasei's Ambitious Plans to Lead in Green Hydrogen Market
Key Ideas
  • Japanese firm Asahi Kasei aims to secure a $73m government subsidy to expand its hydrogen electrolyser manufacturing to 2GW capacity and grow its market share to 20%.
  • The company plans to enhance cell frames and membranes production at its Kawasaki plant and invest $224m in the development, with expectations of becoming a key player in the global hydrogen market.
  • Asahi Kasei's collaboration with De Nora to produce small-scale hydrogen electrolysers seeks to capture a significant portion of the water electrolysis equipment markets by 2030, primarily targeting Europe, North America, and India.
  • The company's strategic vision aligns with the anticipated growth of green hydrogen demand and aims to strengthen Japan's industrial competitiveness in the hydrogen sector.
Japanese technology firm Asahi Kasei is set to receive an ¥11.4bn ($73m) government subsidy to expand its hydrogen electrolyser component manufacturing to at least 2GW capacity, aiming to secure a 20% market share. The company plans to boost production of cell frames and membranes for alkaline electrolysers at its Kawasaki plant. As part of its ambitious plans, Asahi Kasei intends to build a 2GW plant by 2026, adding to its existing 1GW chlor-alkali ion-exchange membrane production. The company expects to invest around ¥35bn ($224m) in the development, with a substantial subsidy aiding the project. Asahi Kasei is leveraging its expertise in hydrogen and chlor-alkali electrolysis to meet the increasing demand in these sectors. By partnering with De Nora, they aim to introduce 1-7.5MW pressurized alkaline electrolysers to various markets. The company's goal is to capture a significant share of the global water electrolysis equipment markets, particularly in Europe, North America, and India by 2030. This strategic move aligns with the projected surge in green hydrogen demand and aims to enhance Japan's standing in the hydrogen industry.
