COP29 Unveils Global Energy Initiatives with Hydrogen at the Forefront
Key Ideas
- COP29 Presidency introduces high-impact energy initiatives focusing on hydrogen to drive global decarbonisation.
- The COP29 Hydrogen Declaration aims to scale up renewable hydrogen production while reducing fossil fuel-derived hydrogen.
- Additional initiatives include the Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge and the Green Energy Pledge to enhance energy infrastructure worldwide.
- Key energy figures such as the IEA Executive Director and IRENA Director-General support the initiatives for accelerating renewable energy integration and grid expansion.
The COP29 Presidency recently revealed a set of significant energy initiatives aimed at expediting the global energy transition, with a strong emphasis on hydrogen as a critical component for decarbonisation. Hosted within a High-Level Roundtable on Green Energy, Hydrogen, and Global Energy Storage and Grids, the announcements underscore the Presidency's ambition to advance the outcomes of the first Global Stocktake on renewable energy and hydrogen. Central to these initiatives is the COP29 Hydrogen Declaration, which pledges to amplify renewable, clean, and low-carbon hydrogen production while phasing out hydrogen derived from unabated fossil fuels.
Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe, praised the Declaration as a monumental step that acknowledges the increasing significance of hydrogen in global climate dialogues. The commitment aims to expand green hydrogen production, currently at one million tonnes annually, while curbing the 96 million tonnes of hydrogen produced from fossil fuels. Alongside the COP29 Hydrogen Declaration, two other crucial initiatives were introduced:
1. The Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge, targeting the deployment of 1,500 GW of energy storage globally by 2030, along with extensive grid refurbishments and additions to enhance energy infrastructure.
2. The Green Energy Pledge, which aims to establish Green Energy Zones and Corridors to link renewable energy sources with underserved communities, supported by enhanced power grid connectivity.
Key energy figures such as the International Energy Agency's Executive Director and the Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency have expressed strong support for these initiatives. They emphasize the critical role of energy storage, grid expansion, and substantial investments in facilitating the integration of renewables into energy systems, aligning with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
Moreover, the COP29 Hydrogen Declaration garnered support from Hydrogen Europe and the Global Hydrogen Industry, led by the Hydrogen Council. The Hydrogen Council's CEO lauded the ambition of the Declaration, highlighting the rapid growth of hydrogen projects globally and stressing the need for accelerated action to achieve climate targets. The industry acknowledges the importance of including hydrogen in Nationally Determined Contributions for 2025 to drive progress towards shared environmental goals.
