Ecopetrol S.A., a major energy firm in Colombia, has revealed plans to construct a state-of-the-art green hydrogen plant at its refinery in Cartagena. This plant is set to become the largest renewable energy producer in Latin America, with an anticipated annual capacity of 800 tons of green hydrogen. The move comes in line with Colombia's strategic objective of lessening its reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning to cleaner energy alternatives. The green hydrogen produced at the Cartagena refinery is aimed to be integrated into the existing operations, specifically for hydrotreating fuels, leading to a reduction of up to 7,700 tons of carbon emissions annually, equivalent to the emissions from around 1,650 vehicles yearly. This initiative by Ecopetrol signifies a significant step towards Colombia's energy transition, showing the commitment of the nation's largest energy company towards sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The company also highlighted the financial benefits of this project, estimating a substantial contribution of $400-$485 million to its EBITDA yearly by 2040, showcasing the economic viability of producing low-emission hydrogen.
