In an effort to advance South Africa's green hydrogen initiatives, the European Union has committed $35 million in grants. These grants aim to accelerate the country's green hydrogen plans, which involve using renewable energy to produce hydrogen for various industries like transport, petrochemicals, and steel. The first grant, valued at $7.8 million, will support Transnet, a struggling state company, in covering infrastructure costs related to railways, ports, and pipelines. The second grant, amounting to $27.6 million, is designated to help South Africa enhance its green hydrogen value chain, a move seen as crucial for both South Africa and Europe's decarbonisation goals. European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, emphasized that these grants will align with South Africa's strategic objectives and facilitate industrialization through green hydrogen. South Africa's Minister of Energy and Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, highlighted the significant opportunities that green hydrogen presents for the country.
