Germany's Hydrogen Ambition: Repurposing Pipelines for a Green Future
Key Ideas
  • Gascade initiates filling hydrogen in its German pipeline network, aiming to repurpose 400km by 2025 for the Flow project.
  • The pipeline, when fully operational, will have a 20GW capacity, facilitating energy transport from Northern to Southern Germany.
  • Germany's ambitious Hydrogen Core Network (HCN) approval by Federal Network Agency signals a strong commitment to hydrogen infrastructure development.
  • European Union regulations support the HCN, with a focus on transmission, storage, and distribution, ensuring third-party access and ROI for operators.
Gascade has started filling hydrogen in the first section of its German pipeline network project, which aims to repurpose approximately 400km of infrastructure by 2025. The Flow project, a 1,630km pipeline set to become part of Germany’s hydrogen core network, will repurpose a 1.4-metre-diameter former natural gas pipeline for hydrogen transport. The pipeline is expected to have a capacity of up to 20GW and facilitate energy transportation from offshore and onshore in Northern Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to Southern Germany. This initiative is seen as a strong signal for the hydrogen economy by Gascade's Managing Director. Additionally, SEFE securing a green hydrogen offtake deal with ACWA Power indicates future integration with the pipeline network. The approval of Germany's ambitious 9,040km Hydrogen Core Network (HCN) by the Federal Network Agency, as highlighted by Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck, demonstrates commitment to the country's hydrogen strategy. The HCN, with significant feed-in and feed-out capacity, will connect import terminals to industrial hubs, aligning with the EU's Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Markets Decarbonisation Package. EU regulations provide a framework for hydrogen infrastructure development, ensuring operators' ROI through regulated third-party access by 2033.
