Wärtsilä has made a significant advancement in the energy transition by launching the world's first 100% hydrogen-ready engine power plant. The plant, based on the Wärtsilä 31 engine platform, is designed to initially operate on natural gas and 25% hydrogen blends. However, it aims to consume 43 tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2030, increasing to 88 tonnes by 2050, in the electricity sector. The Wärtsilä 31 engine platform is known for its exceptional efficiency, quick synchronization capability with the grid, fuel flexibility, and high load efficiency. With over a million running hours and 1,000MW installed capacity globally, the platform has received certifications from TÜD SÜD, making it a reliable choice for power generation. The company plans to make the 100% hydrogen-ready engine available for orders in 2025 and deliveries in 2026. Anders Lindberg, President of Wärtsilä Energy, emphasized the importance of natural gas in the current power systems while highlighting the flexibility of their engines to transition to hydrogen in the future, supporting the path to Net Zero emissions. The development of this hydrogen-ready engine marks a major milestone for Wärtsilä and the broader energy transition. It signifies a crucial step towards achieving 100% renewable power systems, showcasing the commitment to sustainability and innovation. The blend of hydrogen and natural gas has been successfully tested in Wärtsilä engines, further solidifying their position in the transition towards cleaner energy sources.
