Vulcan Centaur Certification: Elevating National Security Space Launch Capabilities
Key Ideas
  • United Launch Alliance's Vulcan Centaur rocket has been officially certified for National Security Space Launch (NSSL) missions, enhancing assured access to space.
  • The certification process involved rigorous evaluations, including successful certification flights, payload interface requirements, subsystem design reviews, and hardware audits.
  • The Vulcan Centaur rocket features the Centaur V upper stage with high propellant capacity, designed for enhanced performance using liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.
  • Despite minor issues in previous launches, the Vulcan Centaur's certification marks a critical milestone in ULA's capability to support upcoming NSSL missions and expand U.S. national security space launch capabilities.
The United States Space Force has officially certified United Launch Alliance’s (ULA) Vulcan Centaur rocket for National Security Space Launch (NSSL) missions, following a comprehensive evaluation process that included two successful certification flights. With this approval, ULA is now authorized to conduct NSSL missions, further enhancing the nation’s assured access to space. The certification process involved meeting 52 criteria and over 180 specific tasks, ensuring the technical foundation for future flight evaluations. The Vulcan Centaur rocket features the Centaur V upper stage, equipped with two RL10C engines fueled by liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, aimed at providing enhanced performance and flexibility for complex orbital insertions. ULA's President and CEO expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort with customer partners and emphasized the Vulcan's capability to meet the demanding requirements of U.S. national security space missions. Despite minor issues in previous launches, such as a propulsion issue with the Peregrine lunar lander and a nozzle anomaly in a subsequent flight, the Vulcan Centaur remains on track to support multiple NSSL missions, boosting the country's capabilities in deploying critical national security assets into space.
