Building the Green Energy Corridor: Exploring the Integration of Hydrogen
Key Ideas
  • The Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor project aims to integrate green hydrogen at a later stage, focusing initially on electricity transmission.
  • CESI, the technical consultant, highlights the complexity and promise of the project connecting Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary with up to 4 GW of power.
  • The project envisions transmitting about 35 GW of renewable energy, including 25 GW from the Caucasus region, with plans for green hydrogen integration delayed to a later phase.
  • The underwater connection across the Black Sea presents a unique challenge, with the project being essential for the region's energy landscape and future sustainability.
During ministerial sessions in Baku, Andrea Meola, Director of Global Markets and Business Development at CESI, discussed the ambitious Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor project. The initiative, which aims to connect Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary, will initially focus on transmitting up to 4 GW of power. While green hydrogen integration is part of the long-term plan, the project will commence with electricity transmission. The technical feasibility study confirmed the potential for a groundbreaking underwater electric cable across the Black Sea, albeit posing significant technical challenges. Meola emphasized the project's ability to incorporate 35 GW of renewable energy, exceeding national energy plans. The first phase involves evaluating the region's renewable energy potential and developing a business case for interregional energy transmission. Despite considering green hydrogen transmission, the decision was made to prioritize electricity transmission initially. The delayed integration of hydrogen underscores the project's strategic approach to sustainability and its pivotal role in reshaping the energy landscape of the region.
