EIB Supports Green Energy Projects at Galp's Sines Refinery in Portugal
Key Ideas
  • The European Investment Bank (EIB) approved a 430 million euro loan for projects at Galp's Sines Refinery in Portugal to advance decarbonization in heavy-duty road transport and aviation.
  • The funding includes a new biofuels unit in partnership with Japan's Mitsui to produce renewable fuels like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel, aiding Portugal in meeting EU SAF mandates.
  • EIB is also financing a 100MW electrolyzer at the refinery to generate green hydrogen, contributing to energy independence and climate goals, with support from public and private investments.
  • These projects align with the European Green Deal and REPowerEU objectives and receive incentives from the Recovery and Resilience Plan, emphasizing sustainability and competitiveness in Portugal.
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has allocated a 430 million euro loan to support two crucial projects at Galp's Sines Refinery in Portugal, emphasizing the decarbonization of heavy-duty road transport and aviation. The financing comprises 250 million euros for a new biofuels unit developed in collaboration with Japan's Mitsui, forming part of a 400 million euro investment. This unit, currently under construction and set to commence operations in 2026, will focus on producing renewable fuels, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. Additionally, EIB is providing 180 million euros for a 100MW electrolyzer project at the refinery, anticipated to start production in the following year. This electrolyzer aims to generate up to 15,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, positioning it as one of the initial large-scale units in Europe. Jean-Christophe Laloux, EIB's Director General, highlighted the importance of supporting advanced biofuels and green hydrogen in contributing to Europe's energy independence and climate objectives. Ronald Doesburg, Galp's Executive Board Member, stressed the significance of both public and private investments in propelling energy transformation, underscoring the need for continuous support to uphold Portugal's competitiveness. These initiatives align with the European Green Deal and REPowerEU goals, receiving 22.5 million euros in incentives from the Recovery and Resilience Plan to further promote sustainability in the region.
